No longer just clones riding the coattails of FromSoftware, these games have built on the Souls ruleset and bloomed into a scene all of their own. There’s a whole movement of games inspired by Dark Souls, and with the likes of Lords of the Fallen, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, and Lies of P arriving over the past 12 months, 2023 was the ultimate proof of that. But that’s exactly what has happened with Soulslikes. It’s even rarer when a new genre breaks out of its niche and becomes a significant part of the medium as a whole. It’s rare that a whole new genre emerges. Runner-Up: Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty It was a feast for fans of the genre, made all the more surprising that one of its anticipated releases spent less time in the limelight than many would have expected. Role-playing games of all different types were represented this year – turn-based and action, strategy and open-world, Japanese and European. We knew it would be a good year for RPGs going in, but we didn’t know that it would be this good. It contained several long-awaited releases, a number of delightful surprises, and a stunning sequel that will be remembered as an all-time great. One of gaming’s oldest genre’s had a remarkable 2023.
